Some Explanations

Hosting

A web host is a company that has computers that are hooked up to the internet 24/7. These computers are called servers and they are assigned IP numbers in order that they may be found by other computers hooked up to the internet and it is on these servers that all your web files are stored.

Basically what happens is when you type a web address into the address bar of your browser and then hit Go, your browser sends out a request to 'get' that web page. The request travels across the internet to the appropriate web server and attempts to locate the web page on that server. If the request is successful (web page exists) then that web page will load (or download) into your web browser.

All web hosts allow you to save your web files to their web server (called uploading) and perpetually be ready to serve them up to the internet (make available for downloading). The web hosting service that stores and serves up web pages to the internet for Northstead Enterprises Ltd charges a fee. The hosting fee is included in the lease.

Domain Name

A domain name is basically the name of your website such as google.com or northstead-enterprises-ltd.co.uk. These are domain names which are registered by official registrars with various domain name authorities. These authorities make up part of an international database or "domain name system" overseen by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The domain name that you select basically consists of two parts:
Second level domain - The actual name of your website, e.g., northstead-enterprises-ltd
Top level domain (TLD) - The 2 or 3 letter suffix at the end of the domain name, e.g. .com, .org, .ca, .uk, etc.

Sitemap

In general, there are two types of sitemaps. The first type of sitemap is a normal web page listing the pages of your site - often by section - and is meant to help users find the information they need.

XML Sitemaps - usually called Sitemaps, with a capital S - are a way for you to give search engines information about your site.

In its simplest terms, a Sitemap is a list of the pages on your website in a form that search engines can understand. Creating and submitting a Sitemap helps make sure that search engines know about all the pages on your site.
