Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Who is Northstead Enterprises?
A. Northstead Enterprise is based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire and has been leasing websites to small and medium sized businesses and associations since 2006.
Q. I’d like a website but I’m not a writer, will I get any help writing the content?
A. Yes, you’ve got three options with your site. You can write all the content yourself, you can supply some and let me do some or you can let me do it all.
Q. If you do it all, what if I don’t like some of it?
A. I’ll change it.
Q. You’ve mentioned that "I'll do this and I'll do that", who are you?
A. I’m Martyn Naylor and, although Northstead Enterprises is a family business, I create your website and make the changes you want, it’s me you speak to when you phone, it’s me who answers when you e-mail and it’s me who deals with your fax messages.
Q. Will my website need any pictures in it?
A. Yes, every website needs pictures to add interest to the page. I can supply some of the pictures but, depending on the type of your business, you may need to supply some as well.
Q. How do I get pictures to you?
A. Most people now have a digital camera or know someone who has one. Pictures from a digital camera can be e-mailed or sent on a CD. Photos from a film camera may be sent for me to scan and return.
Q. OK so I can either supply everything in the site, just send a few pictures or do something in between - I think I’ll go ahead and have a website, what do I do now?
A. The first thing to do is look at the templates page and decide which one you’d like your website to be based on. I’ll need some information from you such as your business name, address, phone numbers, services you offer etc. so complete the online questionnaire or give me a ring and I’ll ask what I need to know.
Q. What if I don’t like the templates?
A. I’m sure that there will be one that you like but if not, tell me what you want.
Templates are only a starting point and everything in them can be adjusted. For instance, every page in the main section of this site has a different image of Scarborough as a masthead. If you’re a Driving Instructor the images would be motoring related, if you’re a Tree Surgeon then we could have a woodland scene.
Q. What happens then?
A. If you want a single page site then I’ll create the page and temporarily upload it to the internet for you to check. I’ll keep making the changes you want until you're happy with it then it will go live on the internet under your domain name.
If you want a multipage site I’ll create the first page for you to check and once we’re settled on the design and layout I’ll create the rest of the pages. Once you’re happy with the site it can then go live on the internet.
Q. What’s a Domain Name?
A. This is the www bit. Every website has a unique domain name which has a prefix of www and a suffix of .co.uk or .com or one of the many other suffixes. It’s the part in the middle that identifies your website. The domain name of this website is www.northstead-enterprises-ltd.co.uk and your site will have something similar. We’ll work together to come up with your domain name which will end in .co.uk and I’ll register it. A domain name registration involves a fee as does the renewal for continuing use. The fees are included in the lease.
Q. My website will be leased, how does that work?
A. I will create a website for your business, upload it to the internet and keep it hosted while the lease is current. The site and domain name will belong to Northstead Enterprises and you will be renting them.
Q. What’s "hosted" mean?
A. Your website will reside on one of a bank of computers running continually and operated by a hosting company. This allows people from anywhere in the world to access your site at any time, day or night. Hosting companies obviously charge a fee which is paid by Northstead and included in the lease.
Q. What happens if I want any changes?
A. The fee you pay for the lease includes changes. If you have a special offer, provide additional service or do anything that requires your site to be changed just send details and it can be included on your site and removed when no longer required. All changes are done by me and you don’t have to learn how to do them yourself as with a Content Management System or CMS for short.
Q. Will people be able to e-mail me?
A. An e-mail link can be included either on a "Contact" page or on every page whichever you prefer. Alternatively you could have a form that your visitors complete and submit online, this form can include any questions that you may want to ask. Remember that having an e-mail link or form in your site means that you’ve got to keep checking to see if any have been sent, you don’t have to have an e-mail link in your website if you don’t want.
Q. How long will it take to get my website online?
A. Not too long, probably between a week and a fortnight but it’s dependent on the content of the site. You’ll need to send some pictures and if you’re providing the content I’ll need that as well. If you’re having a multipage site remember that we’re only going to do the first page to start with so that can be done fairly quickly. I’ll do my part as quickly as possible.
Q. When do you want paying?
A. The first payment will be due on the first day of the month after the site has been completed and uploaded to the internet.
For example, if your site goes live on 9th April the first monthly payment will be due on 1st May.
Q. What if I don’t want more than one page?
A. You can have exactly what you want.
